Girl Scout Cookie and Wine Pairings

Everyone knows that Girl Scout cookies and milk make a great pair, but (for the over 21 crowd) who knew that a rich full-bodied red wine—a 2012 Italian Pazo Primitivo—is the perfect wine to savor with a handful Thin Mints? That’s just one of the Girl Scout cookie and wine pairings that I learned about when I attended an alumni event at Girl Scout Council of Central Maryland (GSCM) headquarters in October.

Girl Scout Cookie and Wine PairingsAround six o’clock, more than 50 excited Girl Scout alums were greeted by a host of smiling  GSCM staff. After checking in, we were directed toward heaping cheese and fruit plates and, of course, platters of Girl Scout cookies that were surrounded by the perfect wine pairings. The wines were selected and generously donated for the event by Bin 604.

After surveying the cookie and wine offerings, here’s what I learned about cookie and wine pairings:

  • If you have a taste for the new Girl Scout S’More cookie, then a glass of 2015 Menhir Negroamaro—a red wine with notes of fig—complements the cookie’s chocolate/marshmallow/graham cracker flavor.
  • When enjoying Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs cookies, a Borges Tawny Port from Portugal, with notes of blackberry jam, is the go-to wine.
  • When eating Caramel deLites/Samoas, 2014 La Mateo Rioja—a Tempranillo that picks up cherry and spice flavorings from barrel aging—provides the perfect taste opus.
  • How about Peanut Butter Sandwiches/Do-Si-Dos? Your wine is a Willm Blancs de Blanc Brut NV from France, a rich soft Chardonnay.
  • Finally, a nice 2016 M.A.N Family Chenin Blanc—a dry white wine from South Africa with apricot and peach flavors—is just the thing to enjoy with a stack of Shortbreads/Trefoils.

Girl Scout Cookie and Wine PairingsAfter we were sated by the generous buffet, the evening’s program began with a warm welcome from GSCM CEO Violet M. Apple and was followed by heartfelt remarks from several alums who relayed their Girl Scout experiences. Last up was yours truly who read a bit from my upcoming Thin Mint Memories book and invited attendees to vote for their favorite Girl Scout cookie where they could win an autographed copy of the book [You can still vote too! Enter by Dec. 15 and you’ll be entered into the drawing.]. The response from the group was great—many alums shared their Girl Scout cookie sales stories with me and others expressed an interest in getting the book. I am so grateful to have been part of the event. With Thin Mint Memories set to begin presales next week on Amazon, I can’t wait to share it with Girl Scouts far and near!

Do you have a favorite cookie complement that you’d be willing to tell us about? While GSCM’s fall cookie sale is coming to a close (if you’re in the Central Maryland region there are still cookies to be had!), the rest of the country is poised to begin their own cookies sales in a month. What possibilities await us all!
